"Everyone loves to give treats to their ponies -- especially children. But in the past, we have asked people not to buy treats -- we didn't want them giving their ponies all those preservatives, chemicals or excess sugars.
"Now we have Skode's cookies and we're happy to have people feed these. They're all natural, wholesome and low-sugar -- everyone benefits!"
-- Denise Chasin, National Director of Pony Nutrition and Health for Personal Ponies Ltd.

Not long ago, Skode's Pony, Harley, died. Though healthy Shetlands have been known to live into their 50s, Harley was only 10.
It is not absolutely certain what he died of, though it is certain he suffered from profound Insulin Resistance. Insulin Resistance is the inability of the horse to process the amount of Insulin being produced in his body. Signs of Insulin Resistance can include obesity, laminitis and founder. Laminitis and founder are the second leading cause of death in horses world-wide. Shetland Ponies have a higher incidence of Insulin Resistance than any horse.
The only known, effective treatment of Insulin Resistance is an appropriate, low-sugar/low carbohydrate diet and plenty of exercise when the horse is able.
To help educate horse owners about the care of Insulin Resistant horses, Skode's Horse Treats Inc. has formed the Harley Memorial Fund. Through this fund, one of things we like to remind people about is that when it comes to feeding ponies, simple, healthy foods are indeed, better. After all, Shetland Ponies orginate from the Island of Shetland -- where these strong creatures thrive on little else but Seaweed and Heather brush.
