Harley suffered from profound Insulin Resistance and the ensuing symptoms of laminitis and founder. Laboratory tests and Veterinary exams showed that he also very likely suffered from an auto-immune disorder for which he begun intense treatment shortly before his death. It is not known whether the Insulin Resistance was Harley's primary or secondary condition -- only that each condition escalated the symptoms of the other.
To this day, Skode's grief includes wishing things could have been different with Harley. The problem with that kind of wishing and thinking is that there isn't any power in it. And if there was one thing Harley was, it was powerful.
Harley -- Happy, Joyous and Free
The Harley Memorial Fund in Action:
Sure, he was a miniature Shetland, but he was also the biggest horse Skode ever met -- the one who always broke through the gate to the apple orchard so his Arabian friends, Vashka and Sunny, could get to the fruit while Skode was sleeping. The one who made everybody laugh in the most serious of situations by untying shoe laces, unzipping jackets and basically causing a constant commotion wherever he went.
No one knew the exact date of Harley's birth. But Skode celebrates his birthday on the 4th of July because of the Holiday's bright colors and loud noises. They suited Harley perfectly.
Times were, people simply looked at Harley and laughed out loud. His joy was that contagious. Now when they think about him, they know how his legacy
will continue to bring joy to horses everywhere.

The national alliance between Skode's and Personal Ponies Ltd. (PPL), is powerful. How can it not be -- PPL brings the joy of the magical Shetland, directly into the lives of special needs children.
Now, with Skode's, PPL will also bring the joy of a pony-sized, low sugar cookie and cookie mix to these Shetlands and their young charges.
Kids & Truly Healthy Treats -- "They Just Go Together!"
Inspired by a little Shetland pony named Harley, The Harley Memorial fund helps to make Skode's mission a reality by bringing news of the low-sugar lifestyle to horses everywhere.
It works by providing non-profit horse organizations and rescue centers the ability to generate fundraising income, and at the same time raise awareness about the health benefits of the natural, low sugar lifestyle for equines.
The national alliance with Personal Ponies Ltd. (PPL) is an example of the powerful difference Skode's is making. PPL brings the joy of the magical Shetland pony directly into the lives of special needs children, and Skode's helps PPL fulfill that mission by contributing a portion of all sales referred by PPL back to the organization.
