Flax -- Our Amazing Whole Food Cookie Base
Each of Skode's cookie recipes are made from a base of at least 80 percent human grade flax. Unlike other horse treats, we do use high-glycemic flours, grains or brans in our products. Instead, we use flax.

Yes, flax is more expensive than flour, grains or brans. However flax, also known as linseed, provides horses with nutrients that they absolutely must have to grow and maintain  healthy coats and hooves: A rich source of essential fatty acids.

In fact, flax is an excellent source of  many nutrients, including:

  • Fiber
  • Minerals, including Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, Thiamin and Manganese.
  • Fats -- especially Omega 3's and 6's. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, omega-3 fats reduce inflammation and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Many horse care providers say this is the reason their  I.R. and/or arthritic horses benefit from the addition of flax to their nutritional programs.

FACT:  High heat baking destroys nutrients. Once formed, our flax-based cookies are dehydrated at temperatures of 150 degrees or less.

FACT:  Horses can not manufacture their own Essential Fatty Acids. These nutrients must be provided.

FACT: Flax very closely mimics the essential fatty acid profile found in natural grasses.

FACT:  For domesticated horses who do not have have access to fresh grasses, the recommended daily serving of flax is between 1/3 cup and 1 cup.

FACT: On average, four to five Skode's cookies contain 1/3 cup stabilized, human grade flax meal.
