The High Fat Low Sugar Energizer Bar provides your horse with a boost of whole food energy when he needs it most. We are featuring this bar for Winter, as we know horses are drawing upon their energy during the stresses of cold weather.
Why high fat?
Because the main purpose of fat is to supply stored energy!
Dr. Cassie Schuster, equine nutritionist and naturopath, and Lori Yearwood, owner of Skode’s Horse Treats Inc., collaborated on a whole food nutrition bar that:
•
Provides a boost of long lasting energy to hard working horses.
•
Offers any horse a filling, nutritious, whole-food snack between meals
•
Gives horses in hauling situations an easily accessible mini-meal
The High-Fat Foods & Why We Chose Them:
Coconut is an extremely useful food because it contains medium chain triglycerides, also known as MCTs. MCTs are a type of fat that are rapidly converted into energy by the body; they are almost never stored as fat by your body. Thus, it does what a snack should do: give great energy.
Coconut Water is high in medium-chain fatty acids or MCFAs. Although MCFAs are saturated fats, not all saturated fats are made equal, and these are the “good guys” in the saturated fat family. One of these “good” functions for example, is its antimicrobial function. An antimicrobial function inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In fact MCF are thought to be so beneficial that manufacturers have developed oils composed entirely of them, called MCT oils.
The Energizer Bar contains no liquid other than coconut water. The mineral composition of water attributes most of its health benefits, as it is reputed to hydrate the body more efficiently after exercise than water because of its electrolyte composition – a big reason sports drinks for humans so heavily rely on coconut water.
Organic Sunflower Seeds and Flax Seeds all contain polyunsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats lower triglycerides and fight inflammation.
Organic Flax contains Omega-3 fatty acids/fats. Omega 3 fats are known to:
•
Prevent and reduce the symptoms of depression
•
Protect against memory loss and dementia
•
Ease arthritis, joint pain, and inflammatory skin conditions
It is important to note that Omega-3 fats are a type of essential fatty acid, meaning they are essential to health, but your body can’t make them. Your horse can only get omega-3 fats from food.
Of course we also choose high-energy super foods to round out and enhance this recipe:
Oranges replace potassium when your horse sweats or is under stress, re-balancing his energy levels.
Spirulina feeds the cells vital minerals and amino acids, which provide energy for the cells to regenerate in a healthy way. Healthy cells = Healthy organs.
