Many horse owners are searching desperately for specialized veterinarian care for their Insulin Resistant and Cushings horses. To help make this connection a reality, Skode's Horse Treats Inc. has created the Vet Connect.
Here, veterinarians publish professional profiles and contact information. Please respect that caring for metabolically challenged horses takes a lot of time and expertise. Do not contact these veterinarians for any other reason than to make a scheduled appointment for your horse. Doing so will jeopardize their presence on this database.
If you know of a particularly wonderful vet who should be here please email us. It is our goal to create a national database that helps horses and the people who love them.
Check back often for updates -- we are only getting started!
Cathy Lombardi, DVM
Southeast Virginia/Northeast North Carolina
Practice: The Oaks Equine and Farm Services, Smithfield, VA. 757-365-4887. www.oaksveterinaryclinic.com, email: equine@oaksveterinaryclinic.com
Lombardi's Philosophy on the Successful Management
of Insulin Resistance:
"The biggest thing I tell clients is that I have very little to do with the success – 95 percent of the success has to do with the client and their dedication. Without that dedication it is very hard to have a successful outcome."
"The day to day management of an I.R horse can be a lot of work," Lombardi says. "It's up to people to make the decision of whether they can really handle that work."
The clients who do well, she finds, are the clients who don't find the work as much of a burden as they do simply a part of everyday life.
"They just work it into their daily routine," Lombardi points out.
And Lomardi is there to help:
"I try to really go over specific recommendations on feed and feeding nad I try to make those recommendations individually tailored to each client and situation."
She doesn't just talk about how to do things like soak hay -- she shows you. And she asks a lot of questions:

What time do you have to be to work?

What time do you get home? Answering questions like these helps

Lombardi ascertain if someone if better off with a prepare,

guaranteed low sugar/low starch hay such as Triple Crown Safe

Starch, or taking the time to soak hay themselves.
Whatever the choices, Lombardi stresses the importance of an appropriate nutritional program -- in its entirety. She shares this analogy with people who might not understand the importance of this all or nothing mentality:
"Suppose your Grandmother is a diabetic. Well, Grandma can't have a healthy diet on Monday, Thursday and Friday and sugar on Snicker bars on Tuesday's, Wednesday's and Saturday's if she's going to be okay!
Diabetes aren't exactly the same disease, Lombardi says, but when she tells people that the level of care for people and diabetes and horses and Insulin Resistance is similar. "It's like a light bulb goes off."
Lombardi's Bottom Line:
"Management of Insulin Resistance in the horse isn't just a lifestyle change for the horse -- it's a lifestyle change for the horse owner, too."
