Who We Are and What We Stand For
Lori "Skode" Yearwood
Lori is the founder and president of Skode's Horse Treats Inc. She is also a a Pulitzer-Prize nominated journalist who specializes in asking people around the world important questions about horses. A regularly published national magazine writer, Lori was awarded second place in feature writing last year by The American Horse Publications.
In addition, Lori is a certified natural barefoot trimmer, and has recently begun sharing healing, barefoot trims with horses other than her own.

Four years ago, Lori and her best friend, Claudia, moved from Southern Florida to Southern Oregon so that they could live on a ranch with Lori's horses. The move was long and stressful. Their truck and trailer broke down because of bad gas in Louisiana. Then it was delayed by a tornado in Texas. And then a 1,000 acre fire in New Mexico! By the time Lori and her horses arrived at Skode’s Horse Ranch in Grants Pass, everyone was exhausted, sore and stressed out.
Lori called people for help for her horses and searched the internet for equine experts. She often felt like she found pieces to the puzzle, but not enough to help her herd regain their strength and life energy.
The more she consulted with experts and the more Lori studied and read, the more she realized how essential a horse’s diet is to his health. Her horses desperately needed balanced, nutrient-rich diets without any processed sugars. With the help of Equine Nutritionist and Veterinarian Dr. Eleanor Kellon, Lori completely overhauled her horses' diets.
Then she searched her local feed stores and the Internet for guaranteed low sugar and low starch treats. She couldn't find a single treat without ingredients like molasses, artificial flavorings, oils and wheats!
So Lori -- aka Skode -- created her own. Her horses loved them. They even did tricks to beg for more. Harley nickered deeply. Sunny stretched his neck out like turtle. Vashka bent his body in half like a yogi.
Skode’s Horse Treats Inc -- the first speciality low sugar/low carbohydrate treat company in the country -- is dedicated to them.

For many years, Claudia has been on this journey with Skode as best friend.
This photograph shows Claudia handwalking Vashka and little Harley on our 28-day trip from Southern Miami to Southern Oregon. We wouldn't have made it through that trip alive without her, and we feel the same way about her now. She is an invaluable part of our lives.
We will always be grateful for her support.

Katy is responsible for much of the hand drawn illustrations on this website. We love her work because it is so many things at one time: whimsical, unpretentious, and yet professional.
Katy was born and raised in Grants Pass, Oregon, amongst a large, amazing, extended family. When she was 11 her mom bought Katy her first pony and Katy was hooked!
Now 23, Katy is a graduate of the University of Montana-Western, where she's earned her Bachelor's in the Natural Horsemanship program -- the only one of its kind in the country.
Katy has been drawing since she can remember. Art isn't only a form of self expression for her -- she is also a playwright -- but she says it relaxes her, and she is happy and proud of the impact it has on others.

Marlene Brooks is Skode's mother, neighbor, and dearest of friends. She is also grandmother of all the animals at Skode's ranch.
She has done everything from help design some of the original packaging for Skode's to baking the company cookies, to making sure all the horses are given their early morning Minty Rose Brownies.
Marlene is a deeply spiritual and principled woman who said to Lori when the idea of Skode's was first born: "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation. Let's go for it!"
Skode's Horse Treats Inc. is a small Oregon-based company that is supported, loved and nurtured by many. There have been scores of angels who have shown up at just the right moment to lend a helping hand or a creative idea and it is because of these people that Skode's has grown steadily over the years. While you may not be mentioned by name on this page, you are held in great esteem and gratitude.
